Pet Portraits
Many years ago I was approached by a lady who asked if I would paint a portrait of her dog. That initial request set me off on another road which has since developed into a very popular extension to my work. Having owned a dog I understand the attachment we have for our pets. I feel the responsibility and importance of producing an accurate portrayal and work hard to achieve this. Always the finished artwork evokes a positive emotional response. Our animal friends mean so much!
Meet...
Bronco - the springer spaniel
This little guy is an extremely energetic animal. His loyalty and devotion to his owner is boundless. Here I tried to encompass these features in his stance and expression.
Meet...
Shona - the west highland terrier
This little Lady was one of four dogs – the rest were males. She ruled the roost! A bright, happy Soul that brought her owner a lot of happiness. She was fun to paint. I find as a painting materialises the character of the animal starts to shine through. It is so thrilling!
Meet...
Cal - the maine coon
Sometimes you come across an animal that’s almost human! Cal was offered to his owners at a reduced rate because he lost a leg at an early age. Whether that had anything to do with the way his character developed one will never know. He was unique and very much loved.
Meet...
Lucky - the black lab
Many years ago he was found on a beach in the US malnourished and very weak with a matted fur coat. It took weeks of patience and endless bowls of food and water to encourage a trusting relationship to develop between the dog and his saviours. Eventually they managed to win him over and they named him Lucky!
Meet...
Harris - the west highland terrier
I spend time just studying each animal, either in real life or a photograph. This way their characters appear. Harris is a thoughtful, pensive chap; an independent fellow.
Meet...
Bratal - the thoroughbred
I love horses so was very pleased to be asked to paint a portrait of this beautiful creature.
Meet...
Grace - the dachshund
She is a lovely little dog. So sleek, smooth and glossy. Her owner has several other dogs but this time she chose a completely different breed. A successful choice.
Meet...
Stan - the fox terrier
Oh My! Stan! He’s one of those characters you never forget! Possibly because he is quite vocal and very excitable so much so you have to clear a way for him to shoot past otherwise you’d be catapulted into Space!!
Meet...
Bengy - the spaniel
Some dogs have soulful expressions. Bengy was an energetic lad. This photo was probably taken when he was thinking of something else – probably food!
Meet...
Phoebe - the Cockapoo
She should be named “The Princess”! A little dog with that’s captured the hearts of her owners. You’ll find her anywhere where she’s comfortable and warm!
Meet...
The Dark Horse
I was in a restaurant in Spain one year and saw this painting of a horse. I thought it dark, mysterious and full of energy. I wanted to copy it. So I did!
Meet...
Frank - the kc spaniel
Frank made such an impact with the grandparents of the owner she thought it would be a good idea to give them a portrait of him for their special anniversary. They loved it so much they took it with them on holiday!
Meet...
Kenny - the west highland terrier
Kenny was an independent little fellow. He padded around minding his own business. It was later pointed out that he was a bit deaf, which explained a lot. Dear little chap. A worrier!
Meet...
Bonkers - the tabby cat
Bonkers was a travelling cat! Slightly feral. He became quite used to travelling in his cage on the back of a moped!
Meet...
Pigiwig - the oxford sandy pig
I love pigs! I’ve always been attracted to this breed so created this painting for a friend to give to her grand-daughter.
Meet...
Casper & Chance
These horses were inseparable! I was asked to paint a portrait of them both together from two photographs. It was given as a gift.
Meet...
Islay - the west highland terrier
Islay – named after an island in the Inner Hebrides – known for its whisky. She was quite a character – larger than life even though she was very small. Bossy lady and very much leader of the pack! Intelligent!
Meet...
Tigsy - the connemara
A hardy, strong sport horse with refined features and a good temperament. He is extremely well loved. It gave me great pleasure to paint his portrait and present it to his owner.
Meet...
Martha - the black lab
Martha was a family dog with a playful Spirit. Here she was waiting for her ball to be thrown! Eager to run!
